Hairstyles are constantly evolving, but some trends circle back in unexpected ways. An example such is the mushroom cutting hairstyle. Also known as the “bowl cut,” this style was considered outdated until it resurfaced recently. With modern tweaks and bold adaptations, the mushroom cut is no longer a relic of the 80s and 90s nostalgia—it’s a statement look that’s turning heads for the right reasons.

What Is Mushroom Cutting Hairstyle?

Its shape reminds people of an upside-down mushroom cap. It is traditionally a short hairstyle with hair cut evenly around the head, creating a rounded, uniform silhouette. In its simplest form, the hair falls to one length, with sharp lines defining the edges, often accompanied by a fringe covering the forehead.

Although its earlier version was simple and practical, the modern reinvention is anything but basic. Today’s mushroom cuts employ textures, asymmetry, fades, and bold color choices to give the style new life and versatility.

Why Is the Mushroom Cut Making a Comeback?

Fashion and beauty trends often recycle themselves, and the mushroom cut is no exception. It resurfaced partly through nostalgia and partly through modern innovation. Some celebrities, models, and influencers are sporting the mushroom cut with an edgy flair. Think dramatic undercuts, pastel hair dye, or even pairing the cut with sleek, futuristic outfits for a high-fashion edge.

It is also popular because more androgynous and gender-neutral styles are being sought out. The mushroom cut has clean, versatile lines that appeal to anyone wanting to blur gender boundaries in their appearance. It’s a hairstyle that feels bold yet approachable, classic yet current.

Who Can Wear a Mushroom Cut?

The mushroom cut is very adaptable. It goes well with all hair types, textures, and face shapes—the key is customization.

For Round or Oval Faces: A slightly asymmetrical mushroom with layers can enlarge soft features.

For Square Faces: A rounded fringe with tapered sides softens angular jawlines.

For Thick Hair: This style naturally works well with dense hair, creating a full-bodied, sleek look.

For Fine Hair: Adding texture or an undercut gives the illusion of volume but keeps the cut small and manageable.

The mushroom cut is also very customizable in length. You can have it cropped close to the head or go for the longer, shaggier version.

How to Maintain a Mushroom Cut

While the mushroom cut may look effortless, keeping it polished requires some upkeep. It needs regular trimming to keep its shape and clean lines. For naturally wavy or curly hair, smoothing products or a straightener might be needed for that classic rounded look. On the other hand, embracing the natural texture of your hair can give the cut a modern twist.

Styling products like pomades or waxes are also useful for adding definition and shine.
