Setup Your Goldfish Aquarium

Step #5 : Choosing goldfish for your aquarium

Your aquarium is ready for fish. But remember, only add a few goldfish at first! It takes time for the aquarium to develop the natural balance required to handle a full tank of fish. If you add too many fish at once, they will pollute the water, get sick, and may even die. Don't make this common mistake! For example, start a 10-gallon aquarium with three small goldfish.

Adding fish to your aquarium

When a fish moves from the pet shop to your house, it gets stressed. To help ease the move to its new home, float the unopened bag in the aquarium for 10 minutes to allow the fish to adjust to the water temperature in the tank. Then, open the bag and gently release the fish into the aquarium. The bag water may contain fish waste (ammonia), so avoid adding the bag water to the aquarium. When adding fish to your aquarium, be sure to add API Stress Coat®. Whenever fish are netted and handled, their protective slime coat is rubbed off. Stress Coat contains Aloe Vera, a "liquid bandage" which protects the fish from disease and the loss of electrolytes. Stress Coat replaces the fish's slime coat, heals torn fins, and reduces stress. Your new fish may sit on the bottom of the aquarium or hide. This is normal. The fish will adjust to their new surroundings and begin to swim around and accept food with 24 hours.
